Men, women, and children from across Barbados flooded the Foursquare playing field in St. Philip recently for the inaugural 40 Fuh Life 5K race organised by Patrick ‘DJ Salt’ Bellamy.
Some 217 participants turned out for the event which was aimed at bringing awareness to prostate cancer.
Bellamy explained, “As a Republic Bank Brand Ambassador, corporate social responsibility is high on our agenda and we are expected to participate in charitable acts. When I turned 40 I decided this was the year to bring about awareness to men’s health. Whilst brainstorming I decided to host a run and to make a donation to a charity and prostate cancer fit quite naturally.”
Following the race, Bellamy thanked the various sponsors and remarked that he was “super excited about the possibility of doing it again.”
He added,”40 Fuh Life was my most rewarding and fulfilling organising experience yet. I can already see ways to improve and enhance the event and I really want to do it again in the future and for it to be even better.”
Bellamy, ably assisted by fellow radio personality, Gaynelle Marshall, presented various prizes to the competitors and other participants. First man across the line was Shamel Maynard. Ryan Felician was second and Jamal Waithe placed third. Meanwhile, the first woman across the line was Isis Gaskin, followed by Danielle Gonsalves and Marlo Hunte in third place.
Republic Bank was the first and largest sponsor of the event and the Bank’s Digital Marketing Specialist, Keimar Williams, was present for the prize-giving.
”Republic Bank supports the achievement of dreams and individual goals, especially among the millennial market. This is a passion of Salt and as our brand ambassador we support his initiatives with this one being aligned with our Power to Make a Different programme (PMAD) . Prostate Cancer is not currently highlighted in the mainstream as some of the other cancers are and we are happy that Salt is bringing awareness to it and helping to demystify any misunderstandings surrounding the cancer, testing and treatment,” he said.
Williams added that the Bank hopes to see the event become a major one on the local calendar.
All proceeds will be donated to the Barbados Cancer Support Services.
