Propelled by an impressive performance from captain and crew, a strong finishing Impulse excelled in windy conditions to outstrip the island’s best J/24s and record a scintillating victory in the Barbados May Regatta which concluded last weekend.
Following podium finishes over the first two days of sailing in the picturesque Carlisle Bay, the Neil Burke skippered Impulse closed out the competition with two second place finishes and a win on Sunday to overtake early pacesetter Hawkeye and end on an unassailable ten points.
Following the outstanding performance, Burke was full of praise for how his crew had piloted the Republic Bank sponsored vessel.
“Conditions were excellent for sailing over the weekend and we enjoyed some very competitive racing. I can’t say enough about our crew including Brian Gibbs who handled the jib superbly; Jono Jones at the bow; Jevan Jutagir in the pit; and Simon Fergusson on the mast. They really came into their own and peaked at the right time on the final day.”
BungaBunga got up for third behind Impulse and the second-placed Hawkeye, while defending champion Die Hard had to be satisfied with fourth. The remaining places went to College Fund$, FLY, Phoenix, Banks Esperanza, Glory Daze and Shakin’ in that order.
